- SBTRKT ft. Yukimi Nagano – Wildfire
I didn’t have much luck in trying to find any background information on SBTRKT, but I do know that his new album is available for download via Amazon and Itunes. If the other tracks are anything like ‘Wildfire’, which features the brilliant Yukimi Nagano, it should be worth checking out.

- Setenta – Funky Tumbao LP
The new album, ‘Funky Tumbao’, by the Paris based group Setenta, on Hot Casa records, is simply beautiful. They effortly blend the sounds of boogaloo, Nuyorican salsa, Chicano rock, funk and soul jazz. These guys are doing for the Nuyorican sound what the Kings Go Forth do for funk or what Quantic is doing for Columbian music. Sometimes you hear a new record and think, “I’ll skip this one”, or “I’ll wait until someone else gets it and have them burn me a copy”; this is not one of those records, go get it. Ray Barretto would be proud.

- Aloe Blacc, You Make Me Smile 12″
The new single from Aloe Blacc’s amazing LP, ‘Good Things’, on Stone’s Throw records, is yet another example of how Aloe is the reigning king of soul music. He manages to avoid being retro, while still wearing his 70′s soul influences proudly on his sleeve.
Lately it seems that you can’t turn on NPR or college radio, without hearing the name Aloe Blacc mentioned. I even picked up a card for a free download of ‘I need a dollar’ at my local Starbucks. It’s great to see someone who actually deserves some commercial success actually get some.

- Aloe Blacc, Femme Fatale
Aloe Blacc follows up his amazing single, ‘I need a dollar’, with another example of why he is one of the great male vocalists currently out there. ‘Femme Fatale’, on Stone’s Throw records, is a cover of a Velvet Underground classic. Aloe stays true to Lou Reed’s soulful vocals and provides a haunting performance. The record has a sort of lo-fi feel to it, even with beautiful string arrangements by Leon Michels of Truth and Soul records. The track is available for download through Stone’s Throw, but please do yourself a favor and get the 7″ single. You’ll definitely being playing this one for years to come.

- Gerardo Frisina, Will You Walk A Little Faster?
The mighty Gerardo Frisina is back with a new single, which serves as an intro to his upcoming album, ‘Join the dance’. While the new album is more of a straight ahead, modal jazz record, this single features two cuts from the album, remixed with Gerardo’s signature, Schema records , jazz dance sound. Of the two tracks, ‘Joy Shout’ is the standout for me, which has energy similar to Gerardo’s dancefloor classics ‘Cubana’ or ‘Cohete. Check back for a review of the full lp.
